BACKGROUND (not condensed):
When Dean was five, he lost his mother in a supernatural incident involving a mysterious, yellow-eyed demon. While his father was trying to deal with the loss of their mother, Dean took care of his younger brother, Sam. Dean’s father became obsessed with finding the cause of their mother’s death and began to raise Dean and Sam to be soldiers. Growing up, the boys learned how to fight and everything there was to know about ghosts and demons from their father, and he eventually taught his sons how to kill them as well.

Their father would often go on "hunting" trips during which he would track down some ghost or urban legend in order to get closer to yellow-eyed demon that killed his wife. Eventually the boys were incorporated into this same lifestyle and the same obsession of finding the thing that killed their mother.

However, Sam wanted nothing to do with this kind of life. He wanted to live a normal life and after a heated argument with their father, he ran away. Dean had always wanted to protect his brother and had a similar wish to live a normal life, but he was a loyal son and remained with his father, continuing to hunt the supernatural, until one day his father disappeared.

After the disappearance of his father, Dean tracked down his younger brother at Stanford College, hoping he would help him search for their dad. After the death of his brother’s girlfriend, by what appeared to be the same circumstances as their mother’s death, Dean and Sam took off on a road trip in search of their father and the yellow-eyed demon. During the road trip, Dean learned that his brother had been having supernatural premonitions. Concerned by this fact, Dean began to be worried that some part of Sam was similar to the things that he hunted and killed. They also found out that there were more children similar to Sam, who also had lost their mothers in fires. After several months, they found their father and learned that he had found a gun that could kill the demon they’d been searching for. But at the same time, the yellow-eyed demon and its minions were also hunting for Dean and his family.

After a showdown with the yellow-eyed demon, who had possessed Dean and Sam’s father, during which Dean was unable to shoot his own father, their escape led them into another trap when one of the minions possessed a truck driver and slammed the truck into Dean’s car.

The family was hospitalized; Dean, suffering the severest injuries of the three, was in a coma but through a miraculous recovery, he woke up. After he awoke from the coma, his father informed him that there was chance that Sam might possibly turn Demonic and if that point came, Dean must kill his younger brother. Soon after his father whispered this secret, his father suffered a fatal heart attack. This devastated Dean beyond belief and even more-so did the suspicion that his father had made a deal with the yellow-eyed demon to save Dean’s life in return for his soul and the gun.

After the death of his father, Dean was emotionally lost. Trying to bury his pain, he became absorbed in his work. Dean didn’t believe his life was worth the sacrifice his father had made. It was during this time that he really began to struggle with guilt and his inability to open his mind to the idea that not all supernatural things are evil, especially after meeting another hunter who had a similar blood lust to his. Dean eventually came to the realization that this hunter was psycho and could be what he would turn into if he continued down the bloody path he was going along.

During one particular hunt, involving a crossroads demon (known for making deal with humans in exchange for their soul after ten years), he learned that his father had indeed made a deal, trading his soul for Dean’s life. Without his father, Dean struggled to continue with his lifestyle, tired of hunting things, tired of saving people. The one thing that kept him going was protecting his brother, making sure his brother stayed alive. He finally told Sam what their dad had said about him possibly becoming demonic. The information shocked Sam and eventually led him to search for more of these “special kids.”

One evening, more then half a year after their father had died, Sam disappeared, taken by a demon. With the help of an old family friend, Bobby, Dean tried to track down Sam. But the two were unable to figure out where he was until Dean suffered headache, which turned out to be a vision of his own: a vision of the Sam’s location.

When he arrived at this old ghost town, he found Sam in a fight with another of the special kids, Jake. Just as Sam was readying to stab his opponent (his evil side kicking), Dean’s voice snapped Sam out of it. But as Sam was walking, wounded, towards Dean, Jake had managed to recover and stabbed Sam in the back, straight through his spinal cord. He was dead.

For several days, Dean stayed in a cabin, staring at Sam’s dead body. Though Bobby tried to help him, Dean wanted none of it. Angry at his father for sacrificing his life, angry at himself for being unable to protect Sam, in a flurry of anger, regret, and unable to live without his brother, Dean got in his car and drove to the nearest crossroad to make a similar deal that his dad had made. Dean traded his soul for the life of his brother and one year to live. If Dean at anytime somehow managed to wiggle out of the deal, that same moment Sam would drop dead. When he returned to the cabin, he found his brother alive. They hugged. Rather then telling the truth, he lied to him about the deal he made.

Soon after Sam came back to life, the three of them sat down to discuss plans for tracking down the yellow-eyed demon. They learned of what had happened to Sam when he had disappeared, that Sam and the other kids were pitted against each other, that the last one alive would lead a demon army. They also learned that the yellow-eye demon had been hoping it would be Sam who won.

They learned that the yellow-eyed demon was getting ready to unleash this army of demons on earth and when they tracked him down to a cowboy cemetery in Wyoming, they were unfortunately too late to stop the gate to hell from opening. They did manage to find Jake and the yellow-eyed demon along with the gun that could kill him. Sam mercilessly killed Jake (shocking to Dean for Sam had always been the one against killing humans or anything that seemed vaguely good). Dean faced the yellow-eyed demon but was out matched and thrown to the ground. During their fight the demon, aware of the fact that Dean sold his soul to bring Sam back to life, suggested that maybe not all of what was brought back to life was truly Sam, that maybe some of what got brought back was demonic. But in the instant that the yellow-eye demon was telling this to Dean, somehow their father’s soul had manage to climb his way out of hell along with the demons that were being unleashed. Their father’s ghost managed to grab hold of the demon and at the same time, Dean managed to get a hold of the gun and shot of the yellow-eyed demon.

After closing the gate, and after saying a final goodbye to their father’s ghost, Sam brought up what Jake had said, about having cut through Sam’s spinal cord and how there was no way Sam could have been alive. Dean didn’t try to deny it because Sam already knew that Dean had sold his soul for him and when he heard that Dean only had one year left to live, he swore he’d save Dean.

Even though the yellow-eyed demon who killed their mother and Sam’s girlfriend was finally dead their job was not over: they’d just unleashed a hundreds of demon, and there was not time to rest.

For the next couple of months, while Sam was tracking down possible ways of getting Dean out of his deal, Dean was try to get the best out of what little time he had left.

But that didn't work out. Time caught up with him and in the last hours of the fight against Lilith they failed, Dean was sent to hell
